Missing man found alive four days after car crash

Four days after his car crashed off a New York parkway, a missing New York City man was found seriously injured but alive, according to a police spokesman. Thomas Wopat-Moreau, 22, was last seen leaving a party in East Fishkill, New York, in the early morning hours May 30. A news release from the New York State Police indicated Wopat-Moreau was driving northbound on the Taconic State Parkway when he drove off the road, launching his car more than 400 feet into the woods of Ancram, New York. Video from the crash site showed Wopat-Moreau's mangled, overturned 2005 BMW surrounded by trees and tall grass. Wopat-Moreau was airlifted to Albany Medical Center, but the hospital would only say he was being evaluated and could not give his condition. New York State Police troopers found Wopat-Moreau at 2:10 p.m. Thursday after tracking a signal from his cell phone picked up by a local tower, Sgt. Michael Comerford said. From the signal, police pinpointed about a three-mile radius where Wopat-Moreau was likely to be and concentrated their search. Family and friends had also been searching for the missing man since Sunday. Wopat-Moreau had no feeling in his lower extremities when he was found, according to Cap. Scott Brown of the New York State Police. Brown is "cautiously optimistic" that he will survive. State police could not comment as to how Wopat-Moreau survived since Sunday, but Brown said, "You talk about perserverence, he's a young man of character and a strong will to live." Police would not comment on the cause of the accident or whether alcohol was involved.

Thomas Wopat-Moreau, 22, of New York City had been missing four days. His car ran more than 400 feet off a New York parkway into trees, tall grass. A local tower picked up his cell phone signal. He was airlifted to Albany Medical Center; his condition not released.

Obama postpones Asia trip as oil spill continues

Indonesian president says he understands Obama's decision. Obama postpones trip to Asia scheduled for later this month. Press secretary says Obama apologized to leaders of Indonesia and Australia. The trip has already been canceled twice. The delay comes as his administration is facing one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history, with up to 798,000 gallons of oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico daily from a ruptured undersea well. "This is imperiling an entire way of life, and an entire region for potentially years," Obama said on CNN's "Larry King Live" Thursday.

I think that Obama made the right decision to delay his trip. Although it was his third time delaying it, I think he needs to because of the oil spill. He needs to be around to assess damages and stuff like that. I also enjoy Indonesia's presidents' name. It is President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Awesome.

At least 70 killed in Lahore attacks

Bombing and firearms attacks in Pakistan targeting houses of worship for a persecuted religious minority killed at least 70 people Friday, a senior government official said. The strikes took place at two mosques in Lahore belonging to the Ahmadi religious group, police and rescue officials said. At the Baitul Noor place of worship in the Model Town region, two attackers on motorbikes fired at the entrance of the building and tossed hand grenades, a rescue official told CNN. Police said one of the attackers is critically injured. The other, clad in a suicide jacket, was detained. At a mosque in the Garhi Shahu neighborhood, one witness there told CNN he saw two attackers armed with AK-47s and another witness said he saw at least four gunmen. Sajjad Bhutta, the senior official, said the heads of three suicide bombers were discovered there. Bhutta said at least 78 people were injured in the violence. Ahmadis regard themselves as Muslim. But the government says they aren't and many Muslim extremists have targeted them. Sunni and Shia Muslims do not regard followers of the religion as Muslims because they do not regard Mohammed as the last prophet sent by God.

It is time to put a stop to the billions the West gives to Pakistan each year. The West should support India - the only real democracy and stabilizing force in the region that everybody knows without doubt is 100% anti-terror. Indians are the biggest victims of Pakistan's most well-known export: Terror. Trusting Pakistan to fight terror is like trusting Nazis to fight racism. We need to fight the Taliban, but the forces to do that should be an international army contributed by countries that are unremittingly anti-terror. Pakistan is a failed state. The international community has no choice but to contain and clean up the mess.

Senate panel, House approve 'don't ask, don't tell' compromise plan

The U.S. House and a Senate committee approved amendments to a military bill Thursday that would repeal the "don't ask, don't tell" policy barring openly gay and lesbian soldiers from military service, but only after some conditions are met. The Senate Armed Services Committee voted 16-12 to approve compromise language on the repeal in an amendment to the military policy bill. The panel then voted 18-10 to send the bill to the full Senate. In the House, the chamber voted 234-194 to add the amendment to its version of the defense policy bill. A final vote on the full bill was expected Friday. President Obama praised the votes. "I am pleased that both the House of Representatives and the Senate Armed Services Committee took important bipartisan steps toward repeal tonight," Obama said in a statement. "This legislation will help make our Armed Forces even stronger and more inclusive by allowing gay and lesbian soldiers to serve honestly and with integrity." Human Rights Campaign calls congressional votes historic. Repeal would happen after military review, presidential OK.

Let those willing to serve do it openly and honestly with integrity and dignity. President Truman integrated the military in 1948 by executive order over the objections of the service chiefs because it was the right thing to do. Yes there was a negative impact, but the military adjusted and is better for it. Colin Powell is a fine example of what can be accomplished with equal opportunity.

BP calls Gulf oil leak 'environmental catastrophe'

This picture is of a porpoise that died due to the BP oil spill.

BP's top official, who had previously said the environmental impact on Gulf of Mexico would be modest, upgraded his assessment Friday to an "environmental catastrophe." Also Friday, engineers in the Gulf tried the "junk shot" method in an attempt to stop a massive oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, BP's chief executive Tony Hayward said. The procedure involved shooting debris such as shredded rubber tires, golf balls and similar objects into the blowout preventer in an attempt to clog it and stop the leak. The goal of the junk shot is to force-feed the preventer, the device that failed when the disaster unfolded, until it becomes so plugged that the oil stops flowing or slows to a relative trickle. The company plans to resume its "top kill" method, pumping heavy mud into the leak. BP admitted it delayed "top kill" pumping for 16 hours on Thursday. President Obama to visit Louisiana coast on Friday to assess damage from oil spill. Scientists say BP spill now largest in U.S. history.

I think that BP needs to work harder on getting this preventer fixed because they delayed their work for 16 hours yesterday. You can't just stop working to prevent the leak from continuing when its turned into an "environmental catastrophe." They should be working around the clock to stop this mess because now its the largest leak in U.S. history. I don't exactly know what President Obama plans to assess or what he's going to do about what he sees. But whatever it is, hopefully he gets things figured out down there and gets the leak plugged.

Clinton urges China for greater access for U.S. businesses

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pressed for greater commercial access for American businesses in China today, urging Beijing for a "level playing field." Clinton spoke to American and Chinese business executives in Shanghai, where she had finished touring the World Expo. She was headed to Beijing for two days of talks that will touch on a wide range of issues of shared interest to the United States and China. "For trade to work in any economy, for it to produce the benefits we know it can, there must be a level playing field where domestic and international companies can compete freely and openly," Clinton said. Clinton is taking more than 200 administration officials to China for the Strategic and Economic Dialogue. North Korea, Iran, Afghanistan are expected to be discussed at the meeting. The U.S. faces a stronger China in wake of a global economic crisis. China began their Expo 2010that, much like the 2008 Summer Olympics, is viewed as part of China's coming-out party as a global player. The fair lasts from May 1st to October 31st and is expected to bring in over 70 million visitors.

I believe that China definitely is coming out as one of the world's top global players. They are really booming in their economy. In the article, it also said that they pumped $58 billion into this Expo 2010 and thst 189 countries are participating in it. So obviously this thing is expected to bring in some big bucks! Clinton is trying to "level the playing field" with China because I think that she's scared that China is going to become better than the U.S. in terms of our economy.

At least 85 killed, scores wounded in Iraqi violence

At least 85 people have been killed and nearly 300 wounded in a string of bombings and shootings across Iraq, the country's Interior Ministry reported late Monday. Attacks were launched in six provinces, including Basra, Wasit and Babil -- which tend to be less violent than others -- in violence reminiscent of what was typical during the height of the sectarian war. The deadliest attack happened in Hilla, in the southern province of Babil. Three bombings there killed at least 36 people and wounded 140. First came a double car bombing that killed at least 23 people and wounded 110, the Interior Ministry said. Then a suicide bomber struck as medics and security forces responded to those blasts, killing and wounding more. The first two bombs in Hilla detonated near a weaving factory busy where employees were leaving work. Other attacks happened in Baghdad, Mosul, Falluja and in cities north and south of Baghdad. The attacks come at a critical time in Iraq, as the country is struggling to form a government after contentious national elections.

It is heart-wrenching that some people have enough anguish and turmoil in their life that they feel they need to commit suicide. But to kill others while you do it? That's just cruel and inhumane. None of those 85 people deserved to be killed and none of the 300 wounded ones deserved that either. There is definitely no place in my heart for the person who committed this terrible act. Gosh, it just makes me so mad that someone would do such a thing. And especially when it comes at such a terrible time for the country when they're trying to establish their government.

The picture shown is a bus that was devastated in a suicide bomb today in Baghdad.

Obama names Kagan as Supreme Court nominee

Obama calls Kagan "consensus builder," "open to a broad array of viewpoints". Kagan received her law degree from Harvard, she later served as dean of the law school. Kagan has argued several high-profile cases before the Supreme Court. Conservative critics say she is too inexperienced to serve on the high court. Some people don't like Kagan's credentials, though. "Among Supreme Court nominees over the last 50 years or more, Kagan may well be the nominee with the least amount of relevant experience," said Ed Whelan, president of the Ethics and Public Policy Center, former law clerk for Justice Antonin Scalia, and former counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Kagan had never argued a case before the Supreme Court or any appeals court before she became solicitor general about a year ago.

I believe that Kagan's credentials are a bit weak but I also believe that President Obama wouldn't nominate her if he didn't have complete confidence in her and her abilities. Kagan has a lot of work to do to become better qualified for this position but if President Obama has faith in her then so do I.

ISSUE #2: Boosting the Minimum

People were angry that the minimum wage was only $5.15 an hour and they wanted it to be changed to $7.25 an hour. Increasing it would raise the take-home pay of millions of Americans and it would raise people out of poverty. It would need the help from food stamps and the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) too. In May 2007, Congress passed a large Iraq war funding bill and it included domestic spending provisions raising the wage and providing $4.8 billion in small business tax breaks. Full time workers that earn minimum wage are still living below the poverty line. Increasing the minimum wage would effect millions of Americans, especially single mothers because they're the group with the highest risk of being poor. They think that doing this would boost the economy because if people have money they will spend more. This would also create wealth throughout all the social classes. But what big businesses are worried about is if the minimum wages increase, then their tax cuts will be taken away and they will still lose a lot of their profits.

I think that having a higher minimum wage is a good thing because then we can keep this country's poverty numbers a bit lower. Plus, not allowing the minimum wage to go up limits the amount of necessities a person can get. Ralph Nader once wrote in a newsletter, "The cost of freezing the minimum wage has deprived millions of working Americans of trillions of dollars for their necessities of life." He is absolutely right! Minimum wage increases are a good thing for this countries and all those big businesses that are against it should stop being so selfish and allow it to happen.

Environmentalists critical of Obama drilling plan

Some environmentalists slam Obama's plan, citing danger to ecosystem and tourism. Florida senator says the plan is better than others proposed. Obama proposal would keep offshore drilling 125 miles from Florida coast. Another environmentalist praises protection for sensitive areas on West Coast. Basically, the environmentalists are angry that Obama has these plans. And as you can see from the picture, people have already been protesting his plans by standing on a beach next to the ocean, holding hands, symbolizing something like a barrier trying to stop them from drilling in the ocean.

I don't exactly understand why the environmentalists are so angry about this plan. Its safer than other ones that have been proposed and its going to be 125 miles off shore. I think that these plans would be good for the economy and it would make gas prices go down for the American people. Some environmentalists need to settle down.

Obama will take to mound for presidential tradition

A presidential tradition that dates 100 years will continue Monday: President Obama will throw out the first pitch before the Washington Nationals take on the Philadelphia Phillies. It all started in 1910 when President William Howard Taft threw a ball from the box seats. There have been a few years, though, wherethe president has not been able to throw the first pitch in a game. Like in 1912, Taft wasn't able to throw the first pitch because the Titanic had just sunk. John Odell, curator of history and research at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, said that President Dwight Eisenhower may have had the best form. It was rumored that he had played for a semi-pro team while he was at West Point.

I think that its a great thing for the president to throw the first pitch of a game. A first pitch says a lot about how a president ought to behave, we want him to take the job seriously but not so seriously that he can't take a few hours to come out and be a regular guy like the rest of us and enjoy our national pastime. Its good to see Obama taking the time to throw the first pitch. He is a veteran when it comes to throwing first pitches. He threw one for a White Sox game in 2005 as the U.S. Senator from Illinois and he lived in Chicago. He also threw the first pitch of the 2009 All-Star Game. But even though he has experience, he doesn't have good form at all so its humorous to watch him throw.

Obama energy plan would open Atlantic and Gulf drilling

President Obama unveiled plans earlier today to open large swaths of U.S. coastal waters in the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico to natural gas and oil drilling. This move will likely please the energy industry but upset the administration's environmentalist supporters. There has been a 20-year ban on drilling off the Virginia coastline, but this plan would lift the ban. And it would put the clamps on sites such as southwest Alaska's Bristol Bay. The plan allows the Interior Department to conduct seismic surveys off the south and mid-Atlantic coasts to determine the quantity and location of potential oil and gas resources to support energy planning.

I think that these plans are a good idea because then the U.S. would be able to have some less expensive prices for barrels of oil since they wouldn't be coming from a foreign country. Therefore, gas prices wouldn't be so inflated in the U.S. and Americans wouldn't have to spend every penny they have on filling a tank of gas!

Obama set to sign health care 'fixes' bill

Obama will sign into law a package of changes to the newly enacted health care reform bill today. The signing ceremony at a community college in northern Virginia will culminate almost a year of fiercely partisan debate and a tortuous legislative journey on the proposals generated by Democrats and unanimously opposed by Republicans. Due to a shifting political landscape, Democrats eventually needed the separate bill being signed Tuesday to make changes in the original legislation in order to get the overall package passed by Congress.

I think that its a good thing that President Obama is going to makes some changes to the health care reform bill. I don't know exactly what changes are going to be made but its a good thing he's making changes because over 70% of Americans didn't want this bill yet they still passed it. But with these changes, I think more people will be satisfied with the health care bill that was passed last week.

Afghan war remains 'absolutely essential,' Obama says

President Obama rallied U.S. troops and pledged continued partnership with Afghanistan during a previously unannounced trip to the country Sunday. Speaking to about 2,000 U.S. and allied troops at the major U.S. base in Afghanistan, Obama said, "Those folks back home are relying on you. I know it's not easy," he said. "You're far away from home. You miss your kids, you miss your spouses, your family, your friends." But he added, "If I thought for a minute that America's vital interests were not served, were not at stake here in Afghanistan, I would order all of you home right away." Obama met with Hamid Karzai (Afghanistan's president) at the Presidential Palace to discuss progress by the Afghan government in strengthening its ability to run the country and provide security for its people. Karzai is expected to come to Washington on May 12th to "express the gratitude of our people for the help that America has given us for the last eight years." He specifically thanked U.S. taxpayers for their aid in helping rebuild his country.

Some people agree with Obama's choice to keep troops in Afghanistan while others disagree with him. I, personally, think that its the President's choice. So since he decided that they need to stay, I'll agree with it. Many people don't understand how many influential factors there are when it comes to making a decision on something like this. I feel that Obama and his cabinet have discussed this issue enough and know what they are doing.

Senators battle again over extending jobless benefits

The Senate was battling again over the issue of a short-term extension of unemployment benefits and other programs. Senators were called to the Senate floor late Thursday for a rarely used "live quorum" so they could try to work out a way forward. Senator Tom Coburn, a Republican from Oklahoma, is objecting to a commonly used unanimous-consent agreement to pass the bill under emergency conditions, even if it increases the federal deficit. Coburn wants to eliminate additional government spending to pay for the bill. Democratic and Republican leaders spent much of the day seeking a solution that would avoid keeping senators in town through the weekend to overcome Coburn's objection. Federal unemployment benefits kick in after the basic state-funded 26 weeks of coverage expire. During the downturn, Congress has approved up to an additional 73 weeks, which it funds.

I think that Senator Coburn's idea is stupid. You don't have to pass this bill under emergency conditions. Coburn should just go back to Oklahoma and watch his Oklahoma St. Cowboys play in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. Oh wait, they lost to a 10 seed in the first round. Good job team. So go home Coburn. No need for this emergency condition talk.

14 states sue to block health care law

Officials from 14 states have gone to court to block the historic overhaul of this new health care bill that President Obama signed earlier this morning. They argue that the law's requirement for individuals to buy health insurance violates the Constitution. Attorney generals from Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and Washington all jumped on board with the lawsuit that was filed in Florida right after the bill was signed. The attorney general from Virginia filed a lawsuit of his own in his own state. The lawsuit states that, "the Constitution nowhere authorizes the United States to mandate, either directly or under threat of penalty, that all citizens and legal residents have qualifying health care coverage."

I feel like the lawsuit that they filed is a good thing because over 70% of Americans wanted health care reform of some sort but they did not want this bill. It just goes to show how much power self-interest groups have in office. Over 70%! Its outrageous that this bill got passed and now many people are disappointed in who they voted for to take political seats for their states because they are not listening to the needs of the people in their state.

'Alice in Wonderland' holds top spot at box office

Tim Burton's 'Alice in Wonderland' holds the top spot at the box office for the second week in a row. In 10 days, it has made $208 million. This movie breaks Burton's previous personal best, 2005's 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory', which also starred Johnny Depp. 13% of that $208 million came from I-MAX 3-D screens. It made $62 million this week. 'Green Zone', starring Matt Damon, took the second spot taking in $14.5 million. 'She's Out of My League' took the 3rd spot, raking in $9.6 million on its opener.

Personally, I think that 'Alice in Wonderland' looks creepy. Johnny Depp just looks like a scary guy in the pictures and trailer of this film. Also, I'm surprised that 'Alice in Wonderland' more than quadrupled 'Green Zone' in its second week. I loved the Bourne Trilogy so I kind of want to see 'Green Zone' because it is directed by the same guy. But congrats to Tim Burton and his 'Alice in Wonderland'.

Senate leader Reid's family hurt in car wreck

Sebate Majority Leader Harry Reid's wife and daughter were injured in an accident recently. His wife, Landra Reid, broke her neck, broke her back, and broke her nose. Senator Reid's daughter, Lana, suffered a neck injury and facial lacerations. Landra and Lana Reid were driving in stop and go traffic on I-95 in Fairfax County when they were rear ended by a tractor-trailer. This collision forced the Reid's car to hit the car in front of them and then that car went into the next lane and hit another car. Everyone that was in this accident, except for Alan Snader who was driving the tractor-trailer, was sent to Inova Fairfax Hospital. Alan Snader was charged with reckless driving.

I believe that the police were right in charging Alan Snader with reckless driving. In stop and go traffic, drivers need to be ready for anything and paying attention to what they're doing. Plus his recklessness caused injury to people in 3 cars. If he wouldnt have been charged then I would have been very angry and I know many other people would be too.

ISSUE #2 - Spending What We Can Afford

Both the president and congress come up with the federal budget. The president first gives his ideas and then he sends it to congress where they give their own input and approve it. The budget outlines the nation's priorities and explains their goals and how they plan to accomplish them. Over the past few decades, the government has spent more than it has received. By spending so much, entitlement spending programs are threatened. An example of this is that Social Security currently is spending less than it takes in. However, after 2017 it will be spending more than it receives due to the fact that so many more people will be drawing off of it and less people will be paying in. Another example is that Medicare is currently spending more in benefits than it is receiving in taxes. Congress says that in order to take care of this problem they are going to use a spending system called paygo. An argument against paygo are that taxes will increase in order to pay for new programs. An argument for paygo is that it will help congress realize the deficits and that they need to stay on top of it.

I believe that paygo is a pretty good idea. Who knows if its going to work well but why not give it a shot? At least this program would make congress take a look at where the money is actually being spent. Congress has been known to overpay some of its bills. Its no wonder why the national debt is so high! A few months ago, President Obama supported a paygo law and actually proposed one.

Coroner: Casey Johnson died of natural causes

Casey Johnson, who was the heiress to the Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Company, died because of natural causes due to her diabetes. She was found dead at a friend's home on January 4th. She died of diabetic ketoacidosis, the coroner found. The Mayo Clinic describes her condition as a serious complication of untreated diabetes. Her lover, Tila Tequila, is mourning Johnson's death. Johnson's family also is.

I kind of feel like she deserved what she got because she didn't take good care of her body, especially because she had diabetes. I remember hearing that she did drugs all day, everyday, and that's not taking care of yourself especially when you have diabetes. I'm not saying that her death was a good thing. Just saying it doesn't surprise me since she wasn't taking care of herself properly.
