Missing man found alive four days after car crash

Four days after his car crashed off a New York parkway, a missing New York City man was found seriously injured but alive, according to a police spokesman. Thomas Wopat-Moreau, 22, was last seen leaving a party in East Fishkill, New York, in the early morning hours May 30. A news release from the New York State Police indicated Wopat-Moreau was driving northbound on the Taconic State Parkway when he drove off the road, launching his car more than 400 feet into the woods of Ancram, New York. Video from the crash site showed Wopat-Moreau's mangled, overturned 2005 BMW surrounded by trees and tall grass. Wopat-Moreau was airlifted to Albany Medical Center, but the hospital would only say he was being evaluated and could not give his condition. New York State Police troopers found Wopat-Moreau at 2:10 p.m. Thursday after tracking a signal from his cell phone picked up by a local tower, Sgt. Michael Comerford said. From the signal, police pinpointed about a three-mile radius where Wopat-Moreau was likely to be and concentrated their search. Family and friends had also been searching for the missing man since Sunday. Wopat-Moreau had no feeling in his lower extremities when he was found, according to Cap. Scott Brown of the New York State Police. Brown is "cautiously optimistic" that he will survive. State police could not comment as to how Wopat-Moreau survived since Sunday, but Brown said, "You talk about perserverence, he's a young man of character and a strong will to live." Police would not comment on the cause of the accident or whether alcohol was involved.
